The World Cup in Russia ended only a few weeks ago, and the last football season ended only a few months ago, but gosh it seems like ages!!
Football is back this weekend, with the start of the English Football League season, although there is another week to wait for the Premier League.
My ones to watch however, are in the lowly Vanarama National League. Salford City FC, the newly promoted outfit, have regularly been making headlines since the footballing “fab 5” – or “class of 92” took over 50% of the club a few years ago.
Salford City FC, incase you didn’t know, are half-owned by Phil Neville, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
10 years ago, Salford City FC were playing their competitive football in North West Counties Football League Division One North.
This season, with promotion to the National League – one step from Football League status – the club turned fully professional. Prior to this season, the club was operating as a semi-pro outfit.
With BTSport showing interest in the club, with their live rights to the National League, it will be an interesting journey this season, to see if Salford City can continue their form, and march into EFL League 2 at the first time of asking.
I’ll be following them closely, and I might, knock out a few updates here as the season progresses!
