A lazy Sunday afternoon jaunt on Flight Simulator X, from Land’s End airfield in Cornwall, to the Isles of Scilly, and back again in a DHC-6.
Flying from Lands’ End to St Mary’s on the Isles of Scilly is typically a short 15-20 minute flight, although given the geographical location, is subject to fast moving and rapidly changing weather.
On what could seem like a calm, clear, sunny day on departure from Lands End, the situation could be considerably different on arrival just 28 miles away.
For this flight however, the conditions were perfect. Winds were not of concern and there was very little cloud cover. This made approaching St Mary’s particularly more relaxing, with the airfield being in view much sooner than would be the case if the conditions had been hazy.
There are just a couple of inaccuracies that I will address in this flight:
> British Airways do not operate any flights between Lands End and the Isles of Scilly. Fixed wing commercial flights are solely conducted by the Isles of Scilly Skybus – owned and operated by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company.
> Land’s End Airport now has an asphalt runway as well as several remaining grass runways. This hasn’t been replicated in FSX in any scenery packages that I’ve been able to find.
