Parliament Must Return – But We’ll Still Have Our Friday’s Off

The deafening din of opposition to Boris Johnson’s prorogation of Parliament was there for all to hear, the opposition parties lapped it up. They’ve taken today off though.

Parliament returned on Wednesday in the now infamous day-long shouting match that ensued. That resumption of proceedings came after a ruling by the Supreme Court that the prorogation was unlawful.

So on Wednesday, Urgent Questions were asked and answered – it was chaotic. Yesterday (Thursday), a few urgent questions, one on Brexit and one on the events in the chamber the day previous. There then came a debate on the “Principles of Democracy and the Rights of the Electorate” – quite what that debate was supposed to achieve, I’m convinced no-one knows. Parliament then adjourned at 5pm.

So we come to today. The house is not sitting. To be honest, the house rarely sits on a Friday.

With that said, and with all the bluster over Parliament being prorogued and losing vital time to debate and legislate – why is the house not sitting today?

Another point. The opposition parties objected to a recess of a few days for the Conservative party conference. Let’s not forget here, that Labour and the Lib Dems have had theirs during the prorogation.

So where are they today?? If the situation is that desperate that the Tories can’t have a recess for a few days for their conference, and that the prorogation was such a dent in democracy that the work of parliamentarians was blocked, where the bloody hell are they?

The very fact that that Parliament stands in recess today (and will be on every Friday leading upto Brexit) puts the following word affixed at the end of the name all those who opposed the prorogation and the short recess next week – hypocrite.

• Hypocritical (adjective): Behaving in a way that suggests one has higher standards or more noble beliefs than is the case.
